HT Pedal Buying Guide: Which HT Pedals Are Right for You?

Pedals are one of the main contact points between you and your bike, but they are often treated as an afterthought. The right pair can make a bike feel more secure, easier to control and more comfortable. The wrong pair can leave you constantly moving your feet around or struggling to clip in when the trail gets rough.

HT Components makes pedals for everything from weekend trail riding to downhill, enduro, cross-country and BMX racing. There is plenty of choice, but the model names do not always make it obvious which pedal will suit you best.

This guide breaks the range down by riding style so you can find the HT pedal that makes the most sense for your bike and the way you ride.

Why Choose HT Components Pedals?

HT has earned a strong following among mountain bikers and BMX racers because its pedals are designed around real riding rather than simply looking good on a bike.

Across the range, you will find broad, supportive flat pedal platforms, replaceable grip pins, strong CNC-machined CrMo spindles and sealed bearing systems. HT's clipless pedals use the brand's own retention system, giving riders adjustable engagement and a secure connection to the bike.

There are also options at very different price points. You can start with an affordable composite flat pedal or move into a CNC-machined aluminium platform or race-focused clipless model without changing brands.

Flat or Clipless Pedals?

Before choosing a model, the first decision is whether you want flat or clipless pedals.

Flat pedals are the easiest option to get on with. They allow you to put a foot down quickly, move your feet around and ride in ordinary flat-pedal shoes. A good flat pedal still gives you plenty of grip and control, particularly when paired with a proper mountain bike shoe.

Clipless pedals connect your shoe to the pedal using a cleat. They provide a consistent foot position and make it easier to stay connected to the bike through rough terrain or during hard efforts. There is a short learning curve, but many trail, enduro, cross-country and BMX riders prefer the secure feel once they are used to it.

Neither system is automatically better. The right choice is the one that gives you the most confidence for your riding.

HT Pedal Comparison

HT  pedal   Pedal type Best suited to Main reason to choose it
PA03A Composite flat Recreational MTB, trail and everyday riding Excellent grip and value
Supreme Aluminium flat Trail and enduro Premium, supportive all-round platform
X3 Clipless with platform Downhill, bike park and aggressive enduro Maximum support and a secure connection
T2 Clipless with platform Trail and enduro Secure engagement with useful shoe support
T2SX BMX clipless BMX racing Fast engagement and efficient power transfer

HT PA03A: The Best Place to Start

The HT PA03A is an easy pedal to recommend because it gives you the things that matter most without pushing the price too high.

Its reinforced composite body creates a generously sized platform under your shoe, while the concave shape and replaceable pins help keep your feet planted. At approximately 350g per pair, it is also lighter than you might expect from such a substantial pedal.

Composite pedals are sometimes dismissed as a budget option, but they make a lot of sense for everyday trail riding. They handle rock strikes well, do not show scratches as readily as aluminium and are available in plenty of colours.

Choose the PA03A if you are:

  • Buying your first proper pair of mountain bike pedals

  • Moving on from the basic pedals supplied with a bike

  • Looking for reliable grip at a sensible price

  • Riding recreational trails, pump tracks or around town

  • Wanting a good pedal for a younger rider's mountain bike

For many riders, the PA03A is all the flat pedal they actually need.

HT Supreme: More Support and a Premium Feel

The HT Supreme is aimed at riders who like the freedom of flat pedals but want a more refined platform underfoot.

The CNC-machined aluminium body feels solid and direct, while its wide platform spreads pressure across more of your shoe. That extra support becomes noticeable on longer descents, rough trails and days when you spend a lot of time standing on the pedals.

Compared with the PA03A, the Supreme has a more premium feel and the durability of an aluminium body. Replaceable pins provide dependable grip and allow the pedal to be refreshed as parts eventually wear.

Choose the Supreme if you are:

  • A committed trail or enduro rider

  • Looking for a durable aluminium flat pedal

  • Wanting a broad and supportive platform

  • Riding rough terrain where foot stability matters

  • Spending long days on the bike

The Supreme is the strong all-round choice for riders who want a quality flat pedal without stepping into a full downhill-specific design.

HT X3: Maximum Control for Downhill and Enduro

The HT X3 is built for riders who put grip and support ahead of weight.

Its large CNC-machined aluminium platform gives your shoe plenty of room, while the low, planted shape helps you feel connected to the bike. The replaceable pins provide serious grip and the front plates add protection and support for aggressive riding.

This is a pedal for steep tracks, rough bike-park laps and enduro stages where losing a foot can quickly spoil a run. It is heavier than a general-purpose trail pedal, but that weight comes with a substantial platform and a reassuringly solid feel.

Choose the X3 if you are:

  • Riding downhill or aggressive enduro

  • Regularly doing bike-park laps

  • Looking for the largest and most supportive HT flat pedal

  • Prioritising grip and durability over low weight

  • Wearing a substantial downhill or enduro shoe

If you want a pedal that feels calm and planted when the trail gets fast and untidy, the X3 is the one to look at.

HT T2: The Trail and Enduro Clipless All-Rounder

The HT T2 combines a clipless mechanism with a supportive platform, making it well suited to trail and enduro riding.

The platform gives you something to stand on when you have not clipped in perfectly and adds stability through rough sections. Four grip pins on each side can be adjusted to fine-tune the contact between the pedal and your shoe.

At approximately 376g per pair, the T2 offers a useful balance of support, security and weight. It is a good step for riders moving from flat pedals to clipless because it feels more substantial underfoot than a small cross-country pedal.

Choose the T2 if you are:

  • Riding trail or enduro

  • Wanting the security of clipless pedals with added shoe support

  • Moving from flat pedals to clipless

  • Riding rough terrain where a small XC pedal feels too minimal

  • Looking for adjustable engagement and grip

The T2 is the clipless model we would point most trail riders towards first.

HT T2SX: Built for BMX Racing

BMX racing places very different demands on a pedal. Engagement needs to be fast, the connection needs to feel secure and every bit of power has to reach the bike when the gate drops.

The HT T2SX is designed specifically for that job. Its compact CNC-machined aluminium body, HT clipless mechanism and additional grip pins create a stable connection for explosive starts and hard sprints. A CNC-machined CrMo spindle and sealed bearing system provide the strength and smooth operation needed for regular racing.

The T2SX has been used by Olympic medallists and World Champion BMX athletes, but its appeal is straightforward even if you are racing at club level: it gives you a firm, consistent platform when fractions of a second matter.

Choose the T2SX if you are:

  • Racing BMX

  • Looking for rapid and positive cleat engagement

  • Wanting a compact, race-focused pedal

  • Prioritising power transfer and foot security

  • Progressing from flat pedals into BMX clipless racing

For BMX riders, this is not simply a smaller trail pedal. It is a model designed around the starts, sprints and movement of BMX racing.

A Quick Word About HT Cleats

HT clipless pedals use HT's own cleat system, so you need to use the correct HT cleats rather than Shimano SPD cleats.

Different HT cleats offer variations in float and release feel. Float is the small amount your foot can move from side to side while clipped in. Some riders like a firmer, more locked-in feeling, while others prefer a little more movement for comfort.

When setting up new clipless pedals:

  • Start with a lighter release tension

  • Position the cleat carefully on the shoe

  • Practise clipping in and out somewhere safe

  • Check the cleat bolts after your first few rides

  • Increase the release tension gradually if you want a firmer connection

If you are unsure which cleat suits your pedal or riding style, talk to us before ordering. Using the right cleat and taking a little time with the setup makes a major difference.

Do Pedal Shoes Really Matter?

Yes. Even the best pedal cannot work properly with the wrong shoe.

For flat pedals, choose a mountain bike shoe with a flat, grippy rubber sole. Running shoes tend to flex too much and their uneven tread does not sit consistently on the pedal pins.

For clipless pedals, make sure the shoe accepts the correct two-bolt cleat. Trail and enduro shoes generally have more sole around the cleat for walking and additional contact with the pedal platform. BMX race shoes are usually stiffer to improve power transfer.

The pedal and shoe work as a system, so it is worth choosing them together.

Which HT Pedal Would We Choose?

For riders wanting an affordable and dependable flat pedal, the PA03A is difficult to go past. It offers a large platform, plenty of grip and good durability without spending a fortune.

For regular trail and enduro riding, we would choose the Supreme if we wanted flats or the T2 if we preferred to ride clipped in.

For downhill and bike-park use, the extra size and support of the X3 make sense. For BMX racing, the T2SX is the purpose-built choice.

The important thing is to match the pedal to your riding rather than simply buying the lightest or most expensive model. A supportive pedal that suits your shoes and gives you confidence will make a bigger difference than a few grams saved on a specification sheet.
