Kids Balance Bikes for Learning, Confidence and Fun.
Balance bikes help young children learn steering, balance and bike control before adding pedals. At Chain Reaction, our range includes lightweight first bikes for younger riders along with off-road options for children progressing onto pump tracks and trails.
Choosing the Right Balance Bike
Don't choose a balance bike by age alone. Your child should be able to sit comfortably on the saddle with both feet securely on the ground and their knees slightly bent. A bike that is too tall or unnecessarily heavy can make learning harder, so check minimum saddle height, rider fit and bike weight as well as the suggested age range.
First Bikes and Off-Road Options
For children just starting out, we'd prioritise low weight, a low standover height and an adjustable saddle over extra features. Bikes such as the Specialized Hotwalk and Apex Peak 12 are designed around this simple first-bike experience.
For confident young riders progressing onto pump tracks, dirt and easy trails, the Kids Ride Shotgun Dirt Hero offers a more capable off-road setup. Dirt Hero wheel kits shown in this collection are upgrade or replacement components rather than complete bikes.
Balance Bike or Training Wheels?
A balance bike teaches children to control the bike's balance themselves. Once they're comfortable pushing, steering and coasting with their feet off the ground, moving to a pedal bike can be a natural next step. There is no need to rush it – confidence and correct fit matter more than age.
Our Thoughts
For a first balance bike, good fit and manageable weight matter most. If your child can comfortably reach the ground and move the bike around themselves, they're much more likely to enjoy riding and build confidence. For riders already looking for more adventure, an off-road balance bike gives them room to progress.
