Kids’ bikes designed for confident first rides, family adventures and young riders ready to progress.
Our kids’ bike range includes balance bikes, first pedal bikes, mountain bikes and specialist junior road bikes from Specialized, Apex, Sullivan and Protege. Whether your child is learning to balance, moving onto pedals or beginning to explore tracks and trails, the right bike should feel manageable from the first ride.
Choosing the Right Kids’ Bike
Age is only a starting point when choosing a children’s bike. Rider height, inside-leg measurement, confidence and experience are more useful. Your child should be able to get on and off comfortably, reach the controls and handle the bike without struggling against unnecessary weight.
A bike that is too large can make starting, stopping and steering harder. Avoid buying a bike purely for a child to grow into. A correctly fitted bike will usually build confidence faster and be more enjoyable to ride.
Kids’ Bike Wheel Sizes
Balance and 12-inch bikes: Designed for young children learning steering, balance and basic bike control.
16-inch bikes: A common first pedal-bike size for smaller riders moving on from a balance bike.
20-inch bikes: Suitable for growing children ready for longer rides, gears or more capable trail riding.
24-inch bikes: Designed for older or taller children who need junior proportions with performance closer to an adult bike.
These are general guidelines rather than fixed age categories. Frame geometry and minimum saddle height vary between models, so check the individual sizing information before ordering.
Balance, Mountain and Road Bikes
For a first bike, we prioritise manageable weight, a low standover height and controls that suit smaller hands. You can see more first-bike options in our Kids’ Balance Bikes collection.
Young riders progressing onto gravel paths, pump tracks and trails may benefit from wider tyres, gears and child-specific mountain-bike geometry. Our specialist junior road bikes are designed for young riders interested in road cycling, track riding or triathlon.
Built and Checked in Our Christchurch Workshop
Our team can help compare wheel sizes, saddle heights and riding positions before you choose. Bikes collected from our Christchurch store are professionally assembled and checked, with the brakes, gears, tyres and key fasteners inspected before handover.
If you are unsure which size or style will suit, visit us with your child or contact the team with their height and inside-leg measurement.
