Choosing a road cycling shoe should be fairly straightforward, but the differences between models aren’t always obvious when you’re looking at a wall of shoes.
The right choice comes down to fit, the type of riding you do and how much sole stiffness and adjustment you actually need. A carbon sole and two BOA dials are useful when racing or training hard, but they won’t make up for a shoe that doesn’t suit your foot.
Specialized’s road range at Chain Reaction starts with the accessible Torch 1.0 and progresses through to the race-level S-Works Torch. Here’s how the models compare and where we think each one fits.

All four shoes use a three-bolt road cleat fitting. This makes them compatible with the main road pedal systems, including Shimano SPD-SL, Look Kéo and Time road pedals.
They are not designed for two-bolt Shimano SPD mountain bike cleats. If you want a recessed cleat that is easier to walk in, have a look at the Specialized Recon range instead.
Torch 1.0 – A Good First Road Shoe
The Specialized Torch 1.0 Road Shoes are a sensible place to start if you’re buying your first pair of road cycling shoes.
A single BOA L6 dial makes them easy to tighten and adjust, including while you’re riding. The sole provides a more stable pedalling platform than a general-purpose cycling shoe without being as stiff or unforgiving as a race-level carbon sole.
That slightly more forgiving feel works well for recreational road riding, commuting, spin classes and riders who are still getting used to road pedals. They also include the same basic Body Geometry support found in the more expensive Specialized shoes.
The Torch 1.0 won’t give you the fine adjustment or direct feel of the Torch 3.0, but that isn’t necessarily a disadvantage. If you ride for fitness, enjoy weekend road rides or are clipping into road pedals for the first time, it covers the important things without adding unnecessary cost.

Our Thoughts on the Torch 1.0
The Torch 1.0 is the shoe we’d show someone who wants to move into a proper three-bolt road setup without spending more than they need to.
It has a straightforward closure, useful Body Geometry support and enough sole stiffness for regular riding. For a rider starting out, getting the correct size and cleat position will make a much bigger difference than jumping straight to a high-end carbon shoe.
Torch 2.0 – The Best All-Rounder

For many road riders, the Specialized Torch 2.0 Road Shoes offer the best balance of comfort, efficiency and price.
The woven carbon sole provides a firmer connection to the pedals than the Torch 1.0, helping spread pressure across the foot when climbing or riding hard. It is stiff enough for fast group rides and long events without feeling unnecessarily aggressive for everyday use.
A BOA Li2 dial controls most of the fit, while a separate forefoot strap lets you fine-tune the pressure across the front of the shoe. The Li2 dial can be adjusted in both directions, so it is easy to add or release a small amount of tension during a ride.
The seamless, perforated upper also helps reduce areas that can rub or create pressure over longer distances. Large rubber sections at the toe and heel provide some grip when you’re stopped, although any road shoe with an exposed cleat still needs to be walked in carefully.
We’d choose the Torch 2.0 for regular club riding, long recreational events, indoor training and riders wanting the benefits of a carbon sole without moving to a full race shoe.

The Torch 2.0 is likely to be the right shoe for the largest number of riders.
You get a carbon sole, a good BOA dial and a comfortable upper without paying for race-level features you may not need. It is a genuine step up from the Torch 1.0 but remains practical enough for everyday road riding.
Torch 3.0 – Performance Without Going to S-Works

The Specialized Torch 3.0 Road Shoes are aimed at riders who want a more secure fit and a direct feel through the pedals.
The unidirectional carbon sole is designed to balance stiffness with low weight. Under hard acceleration or sustained climbing, there is less unwanted movement beneath the foot, giving the shoe a noticeably more responsive feel.
Two independent BOA Li2 dials allow the upper and lower parts of the shoe to be adjusted separately. This is the main practical difference from the Torch 2.0. Instead of relying on one dial and a forefoot strap, you can make small adjustments across both fit zones.
That extra control is useful during longer or harder rides. You may want a firmer hold for a race or interval session, then release a small amount of tension as your feet swell later in the day.
The seamless TPU and mesh upper provides structure around the foot without relying on heavy stitched panels. An internal heel counter helps keep the back of the foot secure when climbing or sprinting.
The Torch 3.0 is the model we’d recommend for road racing, faster club rides, serious training and riders who appreciate a precise fit.

The Torch 3.0 delivers most of what a serious road rider needs.
The dual BOA system is easy to adjust, the carbon sole feels firm under power and the upper holds the foot securely without feeling excessively heavy. For riders training and racing regularly, it is a strong alternative to jumping straight to the S-Works Torch.
S-Works Torch – Specialized’s Top Road Race Shoe

The S-Works Torch Road Shoes are designed for riders who want maximum stiffness, low weight and a secure race fit.
The FACT carbon sole uses an internal I-Beam to maintain stiffness while reducing the amount of material required. The result is a very direct connection between the foot, cleat and pedal.
Two independent BOA dials provide precise adjustment, while the cable routing has been positioned to hold the foot securely without creating unnecessary pressure across the front of the ankle.
The upper uses reinforcement only where it is needed for support, with more adaptable areas allowing the foot to move naturally. An asymmetrical heel counter supports the inside of the heel while providing more room around the Achilles.
The cleat nuts can also be rotated to allow the cleats to sit 5mm farther back. A rearward cleat position can provide additional stability and may reduce load through the calves and forefoot, depending on the rider’s setup.
The S-Works Torch is available in standard and wide versions. Importantly, the wide model uses a genuinely wider carbon base plate rather than simply adding more upper material. This gives riders with a wider forefoot extra space without losing the support and stiffness expected from an S-Works shoe.

Our Thoughts on the S-Works Torch
The S-Works Torch makes sense for riders who will benefit from its low weight, stiff sole and detailed fit adjustment.
It isn’t automatically the best option simply because it sits at the top of the range. Some riders will be more comfortable in the slightly more forgiving Torch 2.0 or Torch 3.0.
If you’re considering the S-Works Torch, we strongly recommend trying it on in both the standard and wide options where available. At this level, the correct fit matters more than the specifications.
How Stiff Should a Road Shoe Be?
A stiff sole creates a stable connection between your foot and the pedal. Instead of the shoe flexing under load, more of your effort is directed through the pedal.
This is particularly noticeable when climbing, sprinting or riding hard for long periods. A stiff sole can also spread pressure across a larger area of the foot, which may reduce the concentrated feeling directly above the cleat.
However, maximum stiffness isn’t essential for every rider. A slightly more forgiving sole can feel more comfortable for recreational riding, especially if you aren’t regularly producing high power.
As a simple guide:
• Torch 1.0 for recreational riding and indoor training
• Torch 2.0 for regular riding and longer events
• Torch 3.0 for performance training and racing
• S-Works Torch for maximum race-level stiffness and efficiency
Fit should still come first. A stiff shoe that creates pressure or numbness won’t perform better than a more affordable shoe that fits properly.
What Is Specialized Body Geometry?
All Specialized Torch shoes use Body Geometry sole construction and footbeds to create a stable and supported position over the pedal.
A built-in Varus Wedge provides a 1mm cant that better reflects the natural angle of the forefoot. This helps improve alignment through the feet, knees and hips while reducing unwanted movement during the pedal stroke.
Longitudinal Arch support helps prevent the foot from collapsing excessively under load, while the Metatarsal Button is designed to support the forefoot and reduce pressure on nerves and blood vessels.
Together, these features provide a more stable pedalling platform, support efficient power transfer and may help reduce the chance of discomfort or overuse injuries.
Body Geometry support is useful, but the shoe still needs to suit your foot shape. Width, length, arch height and overall foot volume remain important.
Single BOA or Dual BOA?
A single BOA dial keeps things simple. It is quick to tighten, easy to release and works well for recreational riding.
A dual-BOA system gives you separate control over different parts of the shoe. This allows the fit to be adjusted more precisely and can help riders who want a secure hold without placing excessive pressure in one area.
The Torch range progresses as follows:
• Torch 1.0 – single BOA L6 dial
• Torch 2.0 – single BOA Li2 dial with forefoot strap
• Torch 3.0 – two independent BOA Li2 dials
• S-Works Torch – two independent premium BOA dials
The advantage of the Li2 and S-Works-level systems is that tension can be adjusted in both directions. You can tighten or loosen the shoe one small click at a time instead of fully releasing the dial and starting again.
Getting the Fit Right
A road shoe should hold the heel securely and feel supported through the midfoot, but your toes shouldn’t be cramped.
Your longest toe shouldn’t press against the front of the shoe. There should also be enough width for the forefoot to sit naturally without the sides of the shoe squeezing it inward.
Feet often swell during long rides and in warm weather. A shoe that already feels tight when you first try it on will usually become less comfortable after several hours.
When trying on road shoes:
• Wear the socks you normally ride in
• Try both shoes
• Fit the larger of your two feet
• Check that your toes aren’t touching the front
• Look for pressure across the widest part of your foot
• Make sure your heel remains secure
• Tighten the BOA dials gradually
• Allow for some swelling on long or hot rides
Don’t choose a smaller size simply to stop your heel moving. If the length is correct but the heel still lifts, the shape of that particular shoe may not suit your foot.
Standard or Wide Fit?
A wide shoe should provide more space across the base of the forefoot, not just a looser upper.
The wide S-Works Torch uses a wider carbon base plate, making it a genuine option for riders who need more room. This is different from simply increasing the volume of the material above the foot.
Signs you may need a wider shoe include:
• Pressure or burning along the outside of the forefoot
• Numbness in the smaller toes
• The upper bulging noticeably over the edge of the sole
• Needing to leave the lower closure unusually loose
• Comfortable length but excessive pressure across the width
Buying a longer shoe isn’t a good way to solve a width problem. It can leave the cleat in the wrong position relative to your foot and allow the heel to move.
Which Road Pedals Work with Specialized Torch Shoes?
All Specialized Torch shoes use the standard three-bolt road cleat pattern. This makes them compatible with Shimano SPD-SL, Look Kéo and Time road pedals.
The cleat must match the pedal system. Shimano SPD-SL pedals need Shimano SPD-SL cleats, while Look and Time use their own cleats. New pedals normally include the correct cleats.
For most riders buying Specialized Torch shoes from us, Shimano SPD-SL is the easiest pedal system to recommend. The platform is wide and stable, entry and release tension can be adjusted, replacement cleats are readily available, and there are good pedal options from beginner through to high-performance riding.
Shimano PD-RS500 – Best for New Road Riders
The Shimano PD-RS500 Single-Sided Road Pedals are the pedals we’d normally recommend to someone using road clip-ins for the first time.
They have lighter spring tension than Shimano’s performance pedals and a larger entry target, making them easier to clip into and release from. The tension can still be adjusted as your confidence improves.
An extra-wide platform supports the shoe and spreads pressure across the forefoot, while the stainless-steel body plate improves durability where the cleat contacts the pedal.
The PD-RS500 is a natural match for the Torch 1.0, but there is no reason it can’t be used with the Torch 2.0 or Torch 3.0. It is a good option for recreational road riding, commuting, indoor training and riders learning to use one-sided road pedals.

Shimano 105 PD-R7000 – The Best All-Round Road Pedal
The Shimano 105 PD-R7000 Carbon Composite Road Pedals are the sweet spot in Shimano’s road pedal range.
A carbon-composite body keeps weight down, while the stainless-steel contact plate provides a durable surface between the pedal and cleat. The extra-wide platform creates a stable base beneath the shoe and helps distribute pressure evenly.
Entry and release tension are adjustable, so the pedals can be set relatively light for riders building confidence or made firmer for racing and faster riding.
The 105 PD-R7000 is the pedal we’d recommend to most riders using the Torch 2.0 or Torch 3.0. It is light and efficient enough for racing but durable and sensibly priced for everyday riding.

Shimano Ultegra PD-R8000 – Lightweight Performance
The Shimano Ultegra PD-R8000 SL Carbon Road Pedals are designed for riders wanting a lighter and lower-profile SPD-SL pedal.
The carbon-composite body and stainless-steel contact plate create a stiff and stable connection with the shoe. An extra-wide platform spreads load across the cleat and supports efficient power transfer when climbing, sprinting or riding at sustained high intensity.
The PD-R8000 also has a lower stack height than Shimano’s more accessible road pedals. This positions the foot closer to the pedal axle for a direct and connected feel.
At approximately 248g per pair, the Ultegra pedals are around 17g lighter than the 105 PD-R7000 pedals. It isn’t a huge difference, but it adds to a lighter complete setup when paired with the Torch 3.0 or S-Works Torch.

Look Kéo Classic 3 – A Good Alternative for New Riders

Choose the Look Kéo Classic 3 if you prefer the Look pedal system or already have Look Kéo cleats on another pair of shoes.
Look Kéo Classic 3 Plus – More Support Underfoot
The Look Kéo Classic 3 Plus Pedals add a stainless-steel contact surface to the proven Classic 3 design.
They pair well with the Torch 2.0 or Torch 3.0 for regular road riding, group rides and longer events.
Look Kéo Blade Carbon – Lightweight Road Performance
The Look Kéo Blade Carbon Pedals use a lightweight carbon body and Look’s Blade retention system.
A large contact area provides plenty of support beneath the shoe, while the 8Nm Blade offers a relatively light release tension. They’re a good match for the Torch 3.0 or S-Works Torch.
Time XPRO 12 SL – Premium Race Option
The Time XPRO 12 SL Pedals are a premium option for riders focused on low weight and racing performance.
They use Time’s own three-bolt road cleats. These fit Specialized Torch shoes but don’t work with Shimano SPD-SL or Look Kéo pedals.
Which Shimano Road Pedal Should You Choose?

The shoe and pedal don’t have to be at the same performance level. A Torch 3.0 will work perfectly well with a PD-RS500, just as a Torch 1.0 can be used with an Ultegra pedal.
The recommendations above are simply the combinations that make the most sense for the type of rider each product is aimed at.
Cleats Must Match the Pedals
Three-bolt road cleats may look similar, but they aren’t interchangeable.
• Shimano SPD-SL pedals require Shimano SPD-SL cleats
• Look Kéo pedals require Look Kéo cleats
• Time road pedals require compatible Time road cleats
If you change pedal systems, you will also need to change the cleats fitted to your shoes.
Specialized Torch shoes aren’t compatible with two-bolt Shimano SPD, Crankbrothers or mountain bike cleats. Those systems require a two-bolt shoe such as a Specialized Recon.
Understanding Shimano SPD-SL Cleat Float
Shimano offers three main SPD-SL cleat options:
• Yellow SM-SH11 – 6° of float
• Blue SM-SH12 – 2° of float
• Red SM-SH10 – fixed with no float
Float is the amount your heel can move from side to side while the cleat remains engaged.
For most riders, the yellow SM-SH11 cleat is the safest starting point. The available movement allows the feet and knees to follow a more natural path through the pedal stroke.
Blue cleats provide a more connected feeling with less movement. Red fixed cleats should only be used when the cleat position has been set accurately and the rider knows that a fixed position suits them.
Cleat Position Matters
Cleat setup has a major influence on comfort and pedalling stability.
The cleat can be moved forward, backward and from side to side. It can also be rotated to suit the natural angle of your feet.
As a general starting point, we position the pedal axle slightly behind the ball of the foot. A slightly more rearward cleat position can improve stability and reduce loading through the calf and forefoot for some riders.
The cleat angle should allow your heel to sit naturally rather than forcing the toes to point directly forward.
If you’re replacing worn cleats, mark the outline of the old cleat before removing it. This makes it easier to transfer the existing position.
If you experience knee pain, numbness, burning feet or uneven pressure, professional cleat setup or a bike fit is worthwhile.
Our Shoe and Pedal Pairings
For someone buying their first road setup:
Specialized Torch 1.0 with Shimano PD-RS500 Road Pedals.
This is the easiest combination to get started with. The shoe is comfortable and straightforward, while the pedal has lighter spring tension and a larger entry target.
For regular road riding and longer events:
Specialized Torch 2.0 with Shimano 105 PD-R7000 Pedals.
The carbon shoe sole and wide carbon-composite pedal platform create an efficient and dependable setup for group rides, long-distance events and everyday training.
For fast group rides and road racing:
Specialized Torch 3.0 with Shimano 105 PD-R7000 or Shimano Ultegra PD-R8000 Pedals.
Choose the 105 pedals for the best balance of price and performance. Choose Ultegra if lower weight and a lower stack height are priorities.
For maximum road performance:
S-Works Torch with Shimano Ultegra PD-R8000 Pedals.
This provides a light, stiff and direct connection for competitive riding while retaining Shimano’s proven adjustable SPD-SL engagement.
Look Kéo Blade Carbon and Time XPRO 12 SL pedals remain excellent alternatives for riders who prefer those systems.
