The Specialized Ambush 2 is a well-ventilated mountain bike helmet made for trail riders who want more coverage than a lightweight cross-country helmet without stepping up to a full-face design.
Its SBC Integrated Fit system, adjustable Tri-Fix splitters and Occipital Base Adjustment give you plenty of scope to fine-tune how the helmet sits. MIPS SL is integrated into the padding, while deep internal channels and 4D brow cooling help keep air moving on long climbs and warmer rides.
Fit and Adjustment
The SBC Integrated Fit system wraps securely around the head, while adjustable Tri-Fix splitters help position the straps neatly around the ears. Occipital Base Adjustment lets you change how the helmet sits around the back of your head and across the brow, which is particularly useful when getting the helmet to work properly with glasses or goggles.
Measure around the widest part of your head and use the Specialized size guide as your starting point. A correctly fitted helmet should sit level, cover the forehead and remain stable without needing excessive pressure from the retention system. If you're between sizes, we'd recommend trying both rather than automatically choosing the larger one.
MIPS SL and 5-Star Virginia Tech Rating
MIPS SL is integrated into the helmet padding rather than using a separate plastic liner. It is designed to allow a small amount of movement between the helmet and your head during certain angled impacts, while the perforated backing helps improve airflow and reduce moisture retention.
The Ambush 2 also received the highest 5-Star rating in Virginia Tech's independent bicycle helmet testing programme. That's useful information when comparing helmets, but we'd still put fit first. A highly rated helmet still needs to be the correct size and positioned properly on your head.
Ventilation and Eyewear
Large internal channels help move air through the helmet and carry heat away from your head, while Specialized's 4D brow cooling feeds fresh air into the front of the helmet. It's a good combination for trail riding where you've often got a decent climb before you get to enjoy the descent.
Hidden rubber flaps provide a secure place to store sunglasses when you're not wearing them, and the helmet is shaped to work naturally with both glasses and trail goggles.
Fixed Breakaway Visor
The integrated visor is fixed rather than height-adjustable. It uses a breakaway design and is positioned to maintain a clear view down the trail while helping channel air into the helmet.
This is the one feature we'd think about before buying. If you regularly move your visor or lift it to store goggles underneath, we'd look at a helmet with an adjustable visor instead. If you normally leave your visor alone, it's unlikely to bother you.

Why Choose the Specialized Ambush 2?
The Ambush 2 is a good option for trail, all-mountain and e-MTB riders who want useful coverage without wearing something that feels heavy or enclosed on the climbs. The ventilation is excellent for this style of helmet and there's enough adjustment to get the helmet sitting properly rather than simply tightening the rear dial.

Our Thoughts
The Ambush 2 gets the important things right. There's plenty of coverage for proper trail riding, but it still breathes well when you're working hard on a climb. We also like the amount of control you have over how it sits, particularly when you're trying to get a helmet and glasses or goggles working comfortably together.
The fixed visor is the feature we'd check before buying. Some riders won't care about it at all, while riders who regularly move their visor or store goggles underneath may prefer something adjustable.
As with any helmet, we'd put fit ahead of the feature list. Measure your head, use the size chart as a starting point and try both sizes if you're sitting between them.
