A Strong Direct-Mount Stem for 35mm Downhill Handlebars.
The Burgtec MK3 Direct Mount Stem is made for downhill racers and gravity riders who want a solid, precise connection between the handlebar and fork. It bolts directly to the upper crown of a compatible dual-crown suspension fork, removing the need for a conventional steerer-mounted stem.
CNC-machined aluminium construction keeps the stem strong without unnecessary bulk, while stainless-steel hardware provides dependable clamping. Choose between 45mm and 50mm reach options to suit your bike and preferred cockpit position.
Direct-Mount Fork Compatibility
The MK3 fits compatible dual-crown forks using the standard four-bolt direct-mount pattern, including selected RockShox BoXXer, FOX 40, DVO, Manitou and Marzocchi fork crowns.
This is not a conventional stem and does not clamp around a 1⅛-inch fork steerer. Check the exact fork model, year and crown mounting pattern before ordering, particularly when working with an older or less common fork.
35mm Handlebar Clamp
The stem accepts mountain bike handlebars with a 35mm centre clamp diameter. It is not compatible with a 31.8mm handlebar and should only be used with a suitable 35mm-clamp bar.
Follow the torque specifications supplied by Burgtec and the handlebar manufacturer during installation. This is especially important with carbon handlebars, where excessive or uneven clamping force can cause damage.
Choose the Right Reach
- 45mm reach: Provides the shorter cockpit position and keeps the handlebar closer to the rider
- 50mm reach: Moves the handlebar slightly further forward and provides additional cockpit length
The 5mm difference is noticeable but not dramatic. Compare the selected length with your existing stem and consider your bike’s geometry, current cockpit setup and preferred riding position before ordering.
CNC-Machined Construction
The MK3 is CNC-machined from aluminium and designed for the loads associated with downhill racing and freeride use. Its broad clamping surfaces create a direct, solid feel through the handlebar, while the included stainless-steel hardware provides dependable fastening and corrosion resistance.
The stem is designed and machined in the UK and is available in a range of Burgtec colours to coordinate with other cockpit components.

Our Thoughts
The MK3 makes sense for a downhill bike fitted with a compatible dual-crown fork and 35mm handlebar. Direct mounting creates a tidy cockpit with a solid steering feel, while the two reach options let you fine-tune your riding position.
We would normally match the reach of your current stem unless you have a specific reason to change it. The 45mm version keeps the cockpit slightly shorter, while the 50mm option adds a little more room. Bike geometry, current cockpit dimensions and rider position should guide the final choice.
