Oval Pedalling Feel with Reliable Thick Thin Chain Retention.
The Burgtec Oval 96/64mm PCD Thick Thin Chainring is designed for compatible mountain bike cranks using the correct 96/64mm bolt pattern. Its oval profile changes the effective gearing through the pedal stroke, while Burgtec’s Thick Thin teeth help keep the chain securely engaged on rough trails.
This 30T chainring is fully CNC-machined from 7075 aluminium and intended for suitable 1x mountain bike drivetrains.
Check Your Crank Compatibility
The 96/64mm PCD specification refers to the chainring mounting pattern. It must match the bolt pattern and mounting position of your crankset.
Do not choose this chainring based only on the number of mounting bolts. Check the crank model and measure the mounting pattern before ordering, particularly as several visually similar Shimano crank standards exist.
This is a replacement chainring for compatible cranksets, not a universal fit. Existing chainring bolts may be reused when they are the correct length and remain in good condition.
How the Oval Profile Works
The oval shape changes the chainring’s effective diameter as the cranks rotate. Burgtec positions the profile at 115 degrees from top dead centre to reduce the time spent around the weaker part of the pedal stroke and provide a smoother transition into the power phase.
Burgtec describes the 30T chainring as having an effective range of approximately 28T through the weaker part of the rotation and 32T through the power phase.
This comparison describes the changing effective diameter through the pedal stroke. The chainring does not physically change gear.
Thick Thin Tooth Profile
Alternating thick and thin teeth match the wider and narrower sections of the chain, improving chain retention on a correctly set up 1x drivetrain. Mud Bleed shaping provides clearance around the teeth to help dirt escape rather than build up between the chain and chainring.
A clutch-equipped rear derailleur is still recommended for trail riding. Chain condition, chainline and derailleur setup also affect how securely the chain remains engaged.
Drivetrain Compatibility
Burgtec lists this chainring as compatible with suitable 10, 11 and 12-speed drivetrains. Compatibility with modern chain designs should still be checked before installation.
Do not assume compatibility with Shimano 12-speed HG+ or SRAM Transmission T-Type Flattop chains without confirmation. This aluminium model is also not Burgtec’s e-bike-specific steel chainring.

Our Thoughts
This chainring is worth considering if you already have a compatible 96/64mm PCD crank and want to try an oval setup without replacing the complete crankset.
Compatibility is the part to check carefully. Confirm the crank’s exact mounting pattern and chain type before ordering, then inspect the chain for wear when fitting the new ring.
