Direct-Mount Chain Retention for Modern Shimano MTB Cranks.
The Burgtec Shimano Direct-Mount Thick Thin Alloy Chainring is a replacement or gearing upgrade for compatible Shimano mountain bike cranksets. Its alternating tooth profile helps keep the chain engaged over rough ground while providing space for mud and debris to clear from the drivetrain.
Available in 30T, 32T and 34T sizes, it lets you adjust your bike’s gearing to suit the terrain and how you ride. A range of Burgtec colours also makes it easy to match the chainring with other components on your bike.
Compatibility
- Shimano Deore FC-M6100 cranksets
- Shimano SLX FC-M7100 cranksets
- Shimano XT FC-M8100 cranksets
- Shimano XTR FC-M9100 cranksets
- Compatible with suitable SRAM and Shimano 10, 11 and 12-speed chains
- Designed for 1x mountain bike drivetrains
- Uses the Shimano direct-mount chainring interface
This chainring does not fit older Shimano four-bolt cranksets or SRAM direct-mount cranks. Check the model number printed on the inside of your existing crankarm before ordering.
Choose the Right Tooth Count
- 30T: A good option for technical trails, heavier bikes and long climbs
- 32T: Versatile gearing for general trail and all-mountain riding
- 34T: Taller gearing for stronger riders and faster terrain
A smaller chainring makes climbing easier but reduces the highest available gear. A larger chainring provides more speed before spinning out but requires more effort on steep climbs. Check frame clearance before moving to a larger size, particularly when fitting a 34T ring.
Thick Thin Tooth Profile
The alternating thick and thin teeth match the changing widths of the chain links. This helps guide the chain onto the ring and keeps it more securely engaged when the bike is moving through rough terrain.
The tooth profile also provides space for mud and debris to clear. A correctly adjusted rear derailleur clutch remains important, and particularly rough riding may still justify using a compatible chain guide.
CNC-Machined Aluminium Construction
The chainring is CNC-machined from 7075 aluminium, providing a useful balance of strength, low weight and wear resistance. It is designed and manufactured in the UK and finished in Burgtec’s range of colours.
This is a round chainring rather than an oval model. Riders wanting oval pedalling characteristics should choose Burgtec’s separate Shimano Direct-Mount Oval chainring.

Our Thoughts
This is a straightforward upgrade for riders using a compatible Shimano direct-mount crank who want reliable chain retention or a different gearing option. A 30T ring is a good choice for steeper terrain, while 32T provides balanced trail gearing and 34T suits riders wanting a higher top end.
Compatibility is the part to check carefully. Confirm the crank model, selected tooth count and available frame clearance before ordering. We also recommend checking chain wear because fitting a new ring to a heavily worn chain can cause poor engagement and accelerate wear.
