Easy Crank Preload with a Standard 8mm Hex Key.
The Burgtec Shimano Crank Bolt replaces the plastic preload cap fitted to compatible Shimano Hollowtech II cranksets. Its 8mm hex fitting makes installation straightforward, while the anodised finish adds a small splash of colour to your drivetrain.
This bolt is used only to set bearing preload before the left crankarm pinch bolts are tightened. It does not secure the crankarm during riding and requires very little torque.
Important Torque Information
Tighten the preload bolt only enough to remove side-to-side play while allowing the crank to rotate freely. Burgtec specifies a torque range of 0.7–1.5Nm.
Do not overtighten it. Excessive preload can damage the bolt, increase bearing drag and shorten bottom-bracket bearing life. Once the preload is set, tighten the crankarm pinch bolts evenly to Shimano’s specification and check that the safety plate is correctly engaged.

Our Thoughts
This is a tidy replacement for Shimano’s plastic preload cap, especially if the original has been damaged or misplaced. The 8mm fitting also means you can install it with a normal hex key rather than searching for the Shimano preload tool.
The important part is remembering what it does. This bolt sets bearing preload; it is not meant to be tightened firmly. Use minimal torque, then let the crankarm pinch bolts do their job.
