The Cannondale Scalpel 1 2025 is a high-end cross-country race bike built for riders who want maximum speed without giving up control when the course becomes steep, rough or technical.

Lightweight Carbon Scalpel Frame
The Scalpel frame uses Cannondale’s lightweight carbon construction with 120 mm of rear-wheel travel. Its stiffness and low weight help the bike respond quickly when accelerating or climbing, while the suspension provides the traction needed to maintain speed across rough ground.
A threaded 73 mm BSA bottom bracket keeps servicing straightforward, while SRAM UDH compatibility makes replacement derailleur hangers easier to source. Full internal cable routing gives the bike a clean finish through the frame and integrated cockpit.
FlexPivot Suspension
FlexPivot uses specially shaped carbon sections in the chainstays to perform the job of a traditional rear pivot. This allows Cannondale to create a true four-bar suspension layout without adding another set of bearings.
The system is designed to remain efficient under pedalling while allowing the rear wheel to follow uneven terrain. On the trail, that means better traction when climbing and more control when carrying speed through rough sections.
Proportional Response
Rider weight and centre of gravity change with frame size, so Cannondale adjusts the Scalpel’s suspension layout and geometry across the size range.
This Proportional Response approach is intended to give riders on every frame size a similar balance of pedalling efficiency, braking control and suspension performance rather than making every size use exactly the same layout.
FOX Factory Suspension
The FOX 34 SL Factory fork provides 120 mm of travel with a GRIP SL damper and Kashima-coated upper tubes. It is designed specifically for modern cross-country racing, combining a lightweight chassis with the control required for increasingly technical courses.
At the rear, the FOX FLOAT SL Factory EVOL SV shock is custom tuned for the Scalpel’s suspension system. It provides efficient support under power while remaining active enough to maintain grip over roots, rocks and braking bumps.
Both units offer the adjustment expected from top-level XC suspension, but correct air pressure and rebound setup remain important. Chain Reaction will set the suspension for your weight and riding style during the bike handover.
SRAM X0 Eagle AXS Transmission
SRAM X0 Eagle AXS Transmission provides electronic 12-speed shifting across a wide-range 10–52T cassette. Its full-mount derailleur attaches directly around the rear axle rather than using a conventional derailleur hanger.
The system is designed to shift cleanly under load, allowing the rider to change gear without backing off as sharply on a steep climb. The AXS Pod controller can also be customised through the SRAM AXS app.
The derailleur uses a removable rechargeable AXS battery. A SRAM AXS charger is supplied with the bike.
DT Swiss XRC 1501 Carbon Wheels
The DT Swiss XRC 1501 SPLINE ONE carbon wheelset helps reduce rotational weight, making the Scalpel quicker to accelerate and more responsive through repeated changes of speed.
The hookless carbon rims have a 30 mm internal width, providing good support for the 2.4-inch tyres. DT Swiss 240 hubs and the rear Ratchet EXP 36 mechanism provide proven internals with dependable engagement and straightforward servicing.
The wheels and tyres are tubeless ready. Sealant and suitable tubeless valves are required to complete the conversion if they are not already fitted.
Fast 2.4-Inch Maxxis Tyres
A Maxxis Rekon Race WT is fitted at the front for predictable cornering and braking grip, while a faster-rolling Maxxis Aspen WT is used at the rear. Both tyres use an EXO-protected, tubeless-ready casing.
The 2.4-inch width provides more cushioning and traction than the narrow tyres traditionally fitted to XC race bikes. They remain fast rolling but give the Scalpel more confidence when the course becomes loose or rough.
SRAM Level Silver Stealth Brakes
SRAM Level Silver Stealth brakes use four-piston callipers to provide more control than a lightweight two-piston XC system. A 180 mm front rotor and 160 mm rear rotor balance stopping power with race-bike weight.
They are well suited to technical cross-country racing and fast trail use. Heavier riders or those regularly tackling long, steep descents may choose to fit a larger rear rotor.
Integrated Carbon Cockpit
The SystemBar XC-One combines the handlebar and stem in a single carbon structure. Its 760 mm width, low position and negative-six-degree stem angle create an efficient race position while retaining enough leverage for technical terrain.
Internal cable routing gives the front of the bike a clean finish. As with any integrated cockpit, there is less adjustment than with a separate handlebar and stem, making correct frame sizing particularly important.
FOX Transfer SL Factory Dropper
The FOX Transfer SL Factory dropper allows the saddle to be lowered for steep descents, technical corners and rough trail sections. Size SM receives 125 mm of travel, while sizes MD and LG use a 150 mm post.
It adds useful freedom of movement without the weight of a longer-travel enduro post and is now an important part of a modern XC race setup.
Cannondale Wheel Sensor
The Cannondale Wheel Sensor records speed, distance and ride information without relying solely on a phone’s GPS signal. It can connect to the Cannondale app and compatible devices to help track rides and bike usage.
It is a useful addition for training and keeping an accurate record of time and distance between maintenance checks.

The Scalpel 1 is still an XC race bike rather than a long-travel trail or enduro bike. Its tyres, brakes and lightweight components are chosen around speed and efficiency. Riders focused mainly on large jumps, bike-park laps or long, steep descents should consider a more heavily built trail bike.
Our Thoughts
The Scalpel 1 is the sort of XC bike that rewards an experienced rider immediately. It accelerates quickly and climbs efficiently, but the 120 mm suspension and modern geometry provide much more room for error than traditional race bikes.
The DT Swiss carbon wheels are one of the strongest parts of the build. Reducing weight at the wheels makes a noticeable difference when accelerating repeatedly, while the 30 mm rims give the 2.4-inch tyres proper support.
SRAM X0 Transmission and the full FOX Factory suspension package leave very little needing an immediate upgrade. The SystemBar also completes the race-focused cockpit, although its integrated design makes correct sizing and initial setup more important.
For riders racing modern XC and marathon events or simply wanting one of the quickest bikes possible for fast local trails, the Scalpel 1 is a properly sorted package.
