Description

A lighter steel coil spring for riders wanting the feel of a coil shock without unnecessary weight.

FOX SLS stands for Super Light Steel. These are genuine FOX coil springs for compatible DHX and DHX2 rear shocks, using a lighter steel construction with fewer coils and a smaller wire diameter than a standard steel spring.

The result is a meaningful weight saving while retaining the consistent, planted feel riders choose a coil shock for. SLS springs are available in Shiny Orange and Matte Black, with the spring rate and maximum spring travel marked directly on the coil.

Choosing the Right Spring

You need to match two things: spring rate and spring travel.

  • Spring rate: Measured in pounds per inch (lb/in). This determines how firm the rear suspension feels and how much sag it runs.
  • Spring travel: The travel figure marked on the spring must be greater than the stroke of your rear shock.

For example, a spring marked 500 lb/in x 2.65in has a 500 lb/in rate and is suitable only for a shock with less than 2.65 inches of stroke.

Before You Order

Do not choose a coil spring by rider weight alone. Frame leverage ratio, riding gear, riding style and the bike’s intended use all affect the required rate.

Use the FOX Spring Calculator as a starting point, then check your existing spring and rear-shock dimensions. The spring must have the correct internal diameter and enough available travel for your shock.

Set sag with the spring fitted. If you cannot achieve the correct sag without using excessive preload, the spring rate is wrong. FOX recommends no more than two full turns of preload once the spring is seated.

Our Thoughts

An SLS spring makes sense for a rider who wants a coil setup but is conscious of bike weight. The bigger decision is still getting the spring rate right. A correctly chosen standard spring will always work better than a lightweight spring with the wrong rate, so use the calculator as a starting point and get in touch if you are unsure.
