Kona Process X
Description

Built for bike parks, shuttle laps and the biggest lines you can find.

The Kona Process X is built for riders who spend their time chasing steep descents, technical lines, jumps and bike-park laps. With 162 mm of rear travel, a 190 mm dual-crown RockShox BoXXer fork and a mixed-wheel setup, it has the stability needed for rough terrain without feeling reluctant when it is time to change direction or get the bike off the ground.

This build is firmly focused on descending. Its short-range SRAM GX DH drivetrain, coil rear shock and downhill-casing Maxxis tyres suit lift-assisted riding, shuttle laps and push-up sessions rather than trail rides involving extended climbing.

162 mm Kona Aluminium Frame

The Kona 6061 butted aluminium frame provides 162 mm of rear-wheel travel. Its sturdy construction is intended for aggressive gravity riding, with the composure required for repeated bike-park runs, large trail features and demanding natural terrain.

A OneUp ISCG05 chain guide with an integrated bash guard helps keep the chain secure and protects the chainring when riding through rocky sections or over larger trail features.

RockShox Gravity Suspension

The RockShox BoXXer Select fork provides 190 mm of travel and is built around a 29-inch front wheel. Its dual-crown chassis adds the steering support needed for high-speed descending, rough braking zones and larger impacts.

At the rear, a RockShox Vivid Coil Base R 205 × 62.5 mm shock provides predictable support and consistent performance through repeated descents. The bike comes with a size-specific coil spring as a sensible starting point:

  • Small: 350 lb spring
  • Medium: 400 lb spring
  • Large: 450 lb spring
  • XL: 500 lb spring

The ideal spring rate ultimately depends on rider weight, riding style and personal preference. We can check the supplied spring and help set up the suspension during handover.

Mixed-Wheel Handling

The Process X combines a 29-inch front wheel with a 27.5-inch rear wheel, commonly known as a mullet setup.

The larger front wheel improves rollover and helps the bike remain composed through rough terrain. The smaller rear wheel provides additional clearance and makes it easier to move the back of the bike through tight corners, jumps and steep sections.

SRAM GX DH Drivetrain

The SRAM GX DH seven-speed drivetrain is designed specifically for gravity riding. Its closely spaced 11–25T cassette keeps the gearing compact and helps reduce unnecessary chain movement when descending at speed.

A SRAM Descendant 7K DUB crankset uses 165 mm crank arms for useful ground clearance. The 34T chainring is paired with the OneUp chain guide and bash guard for additional chain security and protection.

This downhill gearing is not intended for sustained climbing. Riders wanting a bike that can comfortably pedal to the top of every trail should consider a Process 153 or another wide-range trail bike.

SRAM DB6 Four-Piston Brakes

SRAM DB6 four-piston hydraulic disc brakes provide strong, controlled braking for steep terrain and repeated descents. Matching 200 mm SRAM CenterLine rotors front and rear give the system the leverage and heat capacity required for gravity riding.

WTB Wheels and Maxxis DH Tyres

WTB ST Tough i30 rims provide a sturdy platform with a 30 mm internal width for the wide Maxxis tyres. Formula hubs use 20 × 110 mm front and 12 × 148 mm rear spacing.

A Maxxis Assegai 29 × 2.5″ DH MaxxGrip front tyre provides strong cornering and braking grip. At the rear, a Maxxis Minion DHR II 27.5 × 2.4″ DH MaxxGrip tyre delivers dependable drive and braking traction.

The downhill casings prioritise stability, support and impact protection over low weight and rolling speed, making them well suited to rocky trails and repeated bike-park use.

Who Is It For?

  • Bike-park and lift-assisted riding
  • Shuttle laps and gravity-focused trail sessions
  • Steep, rough and technical descents
  • Jump lines and freeride-style terrain
  • Riders wanting the stability of a dual-crown fork
  • Riders who prefer the agility of a mullet wheel setup

The Process X is not intended as an all-round trail bike. Its downhill gearing, dual-crown fork, coil shock, fixed seatpost and gravity tyres make it a poor match for rides involving extended climbing. It is at its best when the main goal is descending.

Our Thoughts

The Process X is a purpose-built gravity bike with a slightly more playful character than a traditional 200 mm downhill race machine. The 29-inch front wheel and BoXXer fork provide confidence through rough sections, while the 27.5-inch rear wheel keeps the bike easier to move around on jumps and tighter trails.

The Vivid coil shock is a good match for repeated descents, where consistency and support matter more than saving weight. SRAM GX DH gearing is simple and appropriate for lift-assisted riding, while the DB6 brakes and matching 200 mm rotors provide dependable stopping power.

This is the bike we would recommend for riders who want to spend most of their time in the bike park or on shuttle-accessed trails but still want something lively enough for jump sessions, side hits and creative lines.

Sizing Information

Kona Process X Size Guide

  • Small: 152–170 cm
  • Medium: 157–183 cm
  • Large: 175–196 cm
  • Extra Large: 180–196 cm

Kona’s recommended height ranges overlap because body proportions and riding style can affect the best size. A smaller frame will generally feel more agile and easier to move around on jumps, while a larger frame will provide more room and greater stability at speed.

Rider height is only a starting point. Reach, inside-leg measurement and preferred handling should also be considered. The fitted coil-spring rate must also suit the rider’s weight. Contact Chain Reaction for personalised sizing and suspension setup advice before ordering.
