Maurten Gel Mix 480 is a powdered carbohydrate fuel for long-distance training and racing. Mixed with 200ml of water, each sachet provides 120g of carbohydrate with a consistency that is thicker than Maurten Drink Mix but looser than its ready-to-use gels.
It is designed to be carried in a soft flask and consumed gradually, giving endurance athletes more control over when and how much carbohydrate they take in.
A Different Way to Carry Fuel
Gel Mix 480 provides the equivalent of three 40g carbohydrate servings in one flask. This can be useful on long rides, gravel events, trail runs and ultra-distance races where carrying multiple individual gels becomes awkward.
There is no caffeine and no added flavour, colour or preservatives. Maurten Additions can be mixed in when you want to change the taste.
Maurten Hydrogel Technology
Gel Mix 480 uses maltodextrin and fructose as its carbohydrate sources. Xanthan gum, sodium alginate, pectin and sodium bicarbonate create its distinctive texture and pH-sensitive Hydrogel Technology.
When the prepared mixture reaches the acidic environment of the stomach, Maurten's Hydrogel Technology is designed to form a stronger gel structure around the carbohydrates.
How to Prepare Gel Mix 480
- Add 200ml of clean water to a suitable soft flask.
- If using a Maurten Addition, add it to the water first and shake.
- Slowly pour in the complete Gel Mix 480 sachet.
- Shake vigorously until fully dissolved with no lumps remaining.
- Leave the mixture to rest for five minutes before consuming.
Use water containing no more than 80mg of calcium per litre. The mixing ratio matters, so do not split the sachet or change the quantity of water.
Gel Mix Flask
Gel Mix 480 is designed for the Maurten Gel Mix Flask 350ml, which has a 200ml fill line, bite valve and SpeedFill cap. Other soft flasks may work, but the Maurten flask is shaped specifically for the product's thicker consistency.
The flask is not included unless it is clearly stated as part of the selected product or promotion.

Gel Mix 480 makes the most sense for genuinely long sessions where carrying and opening several gels becomes a nuisance. Having 120g of carbohydrate in one flask lets you take smaller amounts regularly without dealing with wrappers along the way.
This is a concentrated fuel rather than a hydration drink. Practise using it in training, keep track of how much you consume and carry enough separate fluid for the conditions.
