Why Is Crank Preload Important?

Preload removes unwanted lateral movement from the crank and bearing assembly. Too little can leave noticeable play at the crank, while too much can unnecessarily load the bearings and potentially shorten their life.

A properly adjusted preload ring allows the system to be set so there's no unwanted movement while the crank still rotates smoothly.

This isn't a performance upgrade you're likely to feel in the same way as changing tyres or wheels. It's a small component that makes setting up and maintaining a compatible crankset easier and gives you a more robust alternative to some standard preload adjusters.
