Specialized Recon ADV Gravel SPD Shoes
All-Day Comfort. Confident Walkability. Made for Gravel Adventure.
The Specialized Recon ADV is designed for gravel riders who care as much about the adventure as they do about speed. Its understated styling works equally well on the bike or at the café, while Specialized’s Body Geometry support and stable pedal platform provide the efficiency needed for long days in the saddle.
STRIDE Toe-Flex technology improves walking comfort when the gravel runs out, while extensive SlipNot™ rubber coverage provides dependable grip on loose and uneven surfaces. A protective TPU mudguard and breathable laser-perforated upper complete a practical shoe for exploring well beyond the sealed road.
Body Geometry Support
Specialized’s Body Geometry technology is designed to support efficient alignment through the feet, knees and hips.
The Varus Wedge, Longitudinal Arch and Metatarsal Button work together to create a stable pedalling position, improve comfort and help reduce pressure during longer rides.
Natural Movement Away from the Bike
STRIDE Toe-Flex technology allows greater movement through the forefoot, helping the shoe flex more naturally when walking.
This makes the Recon ADV particularly well suited to gravel adventures that include steep walking sections, track exploration and time spent away from the bike.
A Stable Pedalling Platform
High-density outsole pontoons support the shoe around the recessed cleat, creating a stable connection with the pedal.
This provides a secure and efficient feel while riding without removing the off-bike practicality expected from an adventure-focused gravel shoe.
Comfortable, Breathable Upper
The laser-perforated upper improves airflow and uses a microfibre backing to help manage moisture.
Its supple construction is designed around all-day comfort, making the Recon ADV suitable for long gravel rides, bikepacking and touring where footwear comfort becomes increasingly important.
Protection for Rougher Adventures
A TPU mudguard protects the lower section of the upper from stones, trail debris and general wear.
This additional protection is useful when riding rough gravel roads or walking through terrain where a lighter race shoe could be more easily damaged.
Gravel-Focused SlipNot™ Traction
Increased SlipNot™ rubber coverage provides dependable traction across gravel, dirt and uneven ground.
The recessed two-bolt cleat and grippy tread make walking easier while providing confidence on loose climbs, rocky surfaces and slippery sections.

Our Thoughts on the Specialized Recon ADV
The Recon ADV is the shoe we’d recommend to gravel riders who spend long days exploring and don’t want a shoe that feels overly stiff or race-focused. It provides a stable feel on the pedals, but the STRIDE toe flex and generous rubber tread make it much more practical when you need to walk.
The upper feels supple and comfortable, while the laser perforations help with breathability on warmer rides. We also like the TPU protection around the lower shoe, particularly for rough gravel routes where stones and trail debris can quickly mark lighter footwear.
If outright speed and maximum stiffness are your priorities, the Recon 3.0 or an S-Works model will be the better choice. If your rides include long distances, walking sections and plenty of time away from sealed roads, the Recon ADV is the more comfortable and practical option.
