Specialized S-Works Recon SPD Shoes
Race-Level Efficiency. Tunable Pedal Support. Built for Gravel and XC.
The Specialized S-Works Recon SPD Shoes bring the stiffness, fit and efficient power transfer of a high-performance road shoe to gravel and cross-country riding. Developed using data from more than 100,000 Retül foot scans, they’re available with standard and dedicated wide carbon base plates to suit a broader range of foot shapes.
A lightweight carbon sole with internal I-Beam reinforcement creates a direct connection with the pedals, while Body Geometry support, zoned upper reinforcement and precise BOA® adjustment keep the foot stable during hard efforts. At approximately 280g per shoe in size 44, the S-Works Recon is built for riders who want maximum off-road performance without unnecessary weight.
Body Geometry Support
Specialized’s Body Geometry sole construction and footbeds are ergonomically designed and scientifically tested to optimise alignment through the feet, knees and hips.
The integrated Varus Wedge, Longitudinal Arch and Metatarsal Button work together to position the foot more effectively over the pedal. This provides a stable pedalling platform while helping reduce pressure and unwanted movement during long or high-intensity efforts.
A Fit Shaped by Retül Data
Specialized used information from more than 100,000 Retül foot scans to refine the shape of the S-Works Recon.
The result is a close, supportive performance fit designed to hold the foot securely without creating unnecessary pressure. Standard and dedicated wide carbon base plates allow riders to choose a fit that more closely matches their foot shape.
Dedicated Wide-Fit Construction
The wide-fit S-Works Recon uses its own carbon base plate rather than simply adding more upper material to the standard sole.
This wide base plate is 4mm wider than the current standard S-Works Recon and 8mm wider than the previous-generation S-Works Recon Mountain Bike Shoe. This creates genuine additional space across the base of the shoe while retaining the stiffness and support expected from an S-Works model.
Lightweight Carbon Sole with I-Beam Support
An internal I-Beam adds stiffness and structural strength to the carbon sole without requiring additional bracing. This keeps the shoe lightweight while providing the direct power transfer needed for racing, climbing and hard accelerations.
The stiff carbon platform helps reduce energy loss under load, giving the S-Works Recon a responsive feel similar to a high-performance road shoe.
Tunable Pedal Interface
High-density outsole pontoons and included shims allow riders to fine-tune the contact between the shoe and pedal.
Correctly setting this interface can increase stability and create a broader, more road-like platform around the cleat. This is particularly useful for riders who want a firm and connected feel when sprinting, climbing or riding technical terrain.
Secure BOA® Fit Adjustment
Updated BOA® cable routing improves foot retention across the shoe, removing the need for a separate toe strap.
Zoned reinforcement through the quarter and forefoot provides support where it’s needed during harder efforts, while the BOA® system allows precise fit adjustment before and during the ride.
Asymmetric Heel Support
The asymmetric heel counter provides additional support on the inside of the foot while removing unnecessary material from the outside.
This allows a lower collar around the ankle while maintaining secure heel retention, helping create a close fit without unnecessary restriction around the Achilles.

Our Thoughts on the Specialized S-Works Recon
The S-Works Recon is the shoe we’d recommend to gravel and cross-country riders who want the firm, direct feel of a top-level road shoe in an SPD-compatible design. The carbon sole is very stiff, and the adjustable pontoons and shims help create a solid connection between the shoe and pedal.
The fit is secure and race-focused, but the updated BOA® routing spreads tension well across the foot. We also like that Specialized offers a genuine wide version built around a wider carbon base plate, rather than simply using extra upper material.
This is a performance shoe first, so it won’t feel as flexible to walk in as the Recon 2.0. Getting the correct width, footbed support and cleat setup is also important. When properly fitted and adjusted, however, it provides an exceptionally stable and efficient connection with the bike.
