Specialized S-Works Recon EVO Gravel & XC Shoes
Locked-In Support. Carbon Efficiency. Built for Full-Gas Efforts.
The Specialized S-Works Recon EVO is built for cross-country and gravel racers who want maximum power transfer without sacrificing comfort over longer events. It combines the secure PowerHug closure developed from the S-Works Ares 2 with the proven off-road performance of the S-Works Recon.
A unidirectional carbon outsole provides a stiff and responsive pedalling platform, while the Body Geometry Natural Last helps reduce pressure across the forefoot. Dual BOA® Li2 dials allow precise fit adjustment, creating a secure connection for hard accelerations, steep climbs and sustained race efforts.
Body Geometry Natural Last
The S-Works Recon EVO is built around Specialized’s Body Geometry Natural Last, designed to improve foot support and pedalling efficiency while allowing a more natural forefoot position.
Specialized testing shows a 44% reduction in forefoot pressure. This helps the shoe maintain a secure race fit without creating the concentrated pressure that can lead to hot spots or discomfort during longer events.
Secure PowerHug Support
Specialized’s patented PowerHug closure wraps around the foot to provide a secure and evenly supported fit. Rather than relying only on tension across the top of the shoe, the system helps stabilise the foot from multiple directions.
The result is a locked-in feel that limits unwanted movement during sprinting, climbing and technical riding while remaining comfortable enough for long gravel and marathon cross-country events.
Precise Dual-BOA® Adjustment
Two BOA® Li2 dials provide independent adjustment across separate areas of the foot. Each dial offers precise two-way micro-adjustment, making it easy to fine-tune the fit before or during a ride.
The dual-zone system works with the PowerHug construction to create a close and supportive fit without needing to overtighten the shoe.
Unidirectional Carbon Efficiency
A unidirectional carbon outsole provides the stiffness needed for direct and efficient power transfer. It minimises flex beneath the foot when accelerating, climbing or maintaining high power.
This creates the responsive feel competitive riders expect from an S-Works shoe, helping more of your effort reach the pedals during decisive race moments.
Lightweight Race Construction
At approximately 280g per shoe in size 44, the S-Works Recon EVO balances its carbon sole and supportive PowerHug structure with a suitably lightweight construction.
It retains the stability required for aggressive off-road riding without adding unnecessary bulk, making it well suited to fast cross-country and gravel racing.
Customisable Footbed Support
The S-Works Recon EVO is compatible with Specialized Body Geometry SL Footbeds Gen 2 and Retül Custom Footbeds.
This allows the level of arch support to be matched more closely to the rider, helping improve foot stability, comfort and alignment during long or high-intensity efforts.

Our Thoughts on the Specialized S-Works Recon EVO
The S-Works Recon EVO is the shoe we’d recommend to gravel and cross-country racers who want their feet held very securely during hard efforts. The PowerHug system provides more wrap and support than a conventional BOA® upper, which is noticeable when sprinting, climbing out of the saddle or riding rough terrain at speed.
The carbon sole feels firm and direct under power, while the Natural Last provides more consideration for forefoot comfort than you might expect from a dedicated race shoe. The two BOA® dials also make it easy to adjust the upper and lower sections independently rather than overtightening the entire shoe.
This is still a focused performance shoe, so getting the size, footbed and cleat position right is important. For riders who like the locked-in feel of the S-Works Ares 2 but need an off-road shoe for gravel or XC racing, the Recon EVO is the logical choice.
