Specialized Turbo Vado SL Step-Through
The Specialized Turbo Vado SL Step-Through is made for riders who want a practical electric bike without the usual weight. It is easy to ride, easy to get on and off and, at 16.6kg, light enough to lift onto a bike rack or carry up a flight of stairs. The SL 1.1 motor gives you a welcome boost on hills and into headwinds, while the included lights, mudguards and rear rack make it ready for commuting and everyday riding.
An E-Bike That Is Easy to Handle
The first thing you notice about the Vado SL is how light it feels. It weighs around 40% less than the full-power Turbo Vado, which makes a real difference when you need to move it around the garage, load it onto a vehicle or carry it somewhere.
That lower weight also helps when you are riding. The bike feels lively and easy to steer rather than heavy or cumbersome, and it still pedals well if you ride beyond the assistance limit or switch the motor off.
Smooth, Natural Assistance
The Specialized SL 1.1 motor produces up to 35Nm of torque and 240 watts of peak power. It does not have the forceful shove of a full-power e-bike, but that is not what this bike is trying to deliver.
Instead, the motor adds support smoothly as you pedal. It feels natural in traffic, easy to manage through tighter spaces and well suited to riders who still want to put some effort into the ride.
The handlebar remote makes it easy to change assistance modes, while the Turbo Control Unit shows the remaining battery and current support setting.
Plenty of Range for Everyday Riding
The integrated 320Wh battery is more than enough for most commutes, fitness rides and trips around town. Specialized quotes up to 130km or around six hours in Eco mode under favourable conditions.
If you regularly ride further, the optional Range Extender provides additional capacity without permanently adding more weight to the bike. With the Range Extender fitted, Specialized quotes up to 200km or nine hours in Eco mode.
Range always varies in the real world. Hills, wind, rider weight, tyre pressure and the amount of motor support used will all affect how far you can ride.
Easy to Get On and Off
The step-through frame makes the Vado SL easier to mount, particularly when you are carrying panniers, wearing everyday clothing or stopping frequently in traffic.
Its riding position gives you a good view of the road without feeling excessively upright. The frame is made from Specialized E5 aluminium, with the battery hidden inside the downtube and the cables routed internally for a clean finish.
Set Up for Commuting
The Vado SL already has most of the equipment we would normally recommend adding to a commuter bike.
The Racktime-compatible rear rack carries up to 15kg and works with a good range of panniers and bags. Full-length DryTech mudguards help keep road spray off you, while the kickstand and bell are useful additions for everyday riding.
The front and rear lights run from the main battery, so you do not need to remember to charge another set of lights before heading home.
Simple Gearing and Reliable Brakes
The SRAM NX 1 x 11 drivetrain keeps gear selection straightforward. Its 11–42T cassette provides a useful range for urban riding, cycleways and hillier routes without the added complication of a front derailleur.
Tektro hydraulic disc brakes provide reliable stopping power in wet or dry conditions. The 38mm Nimbus II tyres add comfort and grip on rough roads and gravel paths while still rolling efficiently on sealed surfaces.
Reflective sidewalls improve visibility, and BlackBelt protection helps reduce the chance of punctures during regular commuting.

Why Riders Love the Specialized Turbo Vado SL Step-Through
The Vado SL works well for riders who like the idea of electric assistance but do not want a heavy bike. It gives you enough support to take the sting out of hills and headwinds while retaining the familiar feel of a regular bicycle.
Easy to Lift and Store
At 16.6kg, the Vado SL is much easier to lift onto a rack, carry up stairs or store in a smaller space than most electric bikes.
Natural to Ride
The motor works with your pedalling rather than taking over. This makes the bike feel predictable and easy to control, particularly in traffic.
Convenient Step-Through Frame
The lower frame makes mounting and dismounting easier, especially when the rear rack is loaded or mobility is limited.
Ready from Day One
Lights, mudguards, a rack, kickstand, bell and pedals are already fitted. You do not need to immediately spend more money turning it into a practical commuter.
Comfortable on Rougher Roads
The 38mm tyres take the edge off coarse chipseal, broken road surfaces and gravel paths without feeling slow on sealed roads.
Enough Range for Longer Rides
The standard battery covers most everyday riding, while the optional Range Extender is available if your routes become longer.
Easy to Maintain
The SRAM mechanical drivetrain and conventional bicycle components can be serviced by an experienced workshop without needing specialist electronic shifting equipment.

Our Thoughts on the Specialized Turbo Vado SL Step-Through
The Vado SL is one of those e-bikes that makes more sense once you pick it up and ride it. It is noticeably lighter than a full-power commuter bike, which makes it much easier to live with if you need to carry it, transport it regularly or store it somewhere with limited space.
The SL 1.1 motor is not designed to power you up every hill with minimal effort. It provides a gentler and more natural level of assistance, making it a better fit for riders who still want some exercise but would appreciate help on hills, into the wind or at the end of a long day.
We also like that the practical equipment is already fitted. The rack is useful, the mudguards offer proper coverage and the integrated lights are always available when the conditions change.
If you want maximum motor power or regularly carry heavy loads, the full-power Turbo Vado is likely the better choice. If low weight, easy handling and a natural ride are more important, the Vado SL is the bike we would recommend.
