Everything You Need to Convert Two Tubeless-Ready MTB Wheels.
The Stan’s Mountain Bike Tubeless Conversion Kit brings together the main parts needed to convert a compatible mountain bike wheelset to tubeless. Each kit includes a 10-yard roll of Stan’s Yellow Tape, two 44mm brass tubeless valves and 200ml of Stan’s Original Tubeless Sealant.
Running tubeless can reduce pinch flats, allow lower tyre pressures and improve grip and comfort on rough trails. Correct setup still depends on using compatible rims and tyres and selecting the right tape width for your wheels.
Check Your Wheels Before Starting
Only use this kit with rims and tyres specifically approved for tubeless use. Look for markings such as Tubeless Ready, TLR or UST on the rim and tyre. If you are unsure, check the wheel and tyre manufacturer’s specifications before starting.
The supplied 44mm valves are recommended for rims up to approximately 28mm deep. Deeper rims may require longer tubeless valves.
Choosing the Correct Tape Width
Stan’s recommends using tape approximately 1–2mm wider than the internal width of the rim. This allows the tape to follow the shape of the rim bed and properly cover the spoke holes.
As a general guide:
- 21mm tape: for rims approximately 19–20mm wide internally
- 25mm tape: for rims approximately 23–24mm wide internally
- 27mm tape: for rims approximately 25–26mm wide internally
- 30mm tape: for rims approximately 28–29mm wide internally
- 33mm tape: for rims approximately 31–32mm wide internally
If your rim width falls between two tape sizes, Stan’s recommends choosing the wider option. Measure the internal width between the bead hooks rather than the external width of the rim.
Stan’s Yellow Tape and Brass Valves
Stan’s Yellow Tape creates the airtight rim-bed seal required for a tubeless setup. Unlike some porous tapes, it is designed to stop sealant and moisture from entering the rim cavity.
The 10-yard roll provides enough tape for at least two compatible mountain bike wheels, with the exact amount depending on wheel diameter, rim shape and the number of wraps required.
The two included 44mm brass Presta valves fit through the taped rim bed and provide a removable valve core for easier sealant installation and maintenance.
Stan’s Original Tubeless Sealant
The kit includes 200ml of Stan’s Original Tubeless Sealant. It is designed to seal small punctures while you ride and can seal punctures up to approximately 6.5mm, although results depend on the tyre, pressure and location of the damage.
The amount required for each wheel varies with tyre volume. The supplied sealant is generally suitable for converting two standard MTB tyres, but larger-volume tyres may require additional sealant.
Sealant dries out over time, so check and top it up regularly. It is still sensible to carry a tubeless plug kit, pump and spare tube for punctures that sealant cannot repair.
