The ULAC Neo Vue Otaku 18 Photochromic Cycling Sunglasses are a lighter, rimless version of the original Otaku. This model combines a Purple frame with an Emerald photochromic lens for road, gravel and mountain biking.
The rimless design provides a clear field of view, while lens vents encourage airflow during warmer rides and slower climbs. At approximately 18g, the Otaku 18 is light enough to sit comfortably beneath most cycling helmets without feeling bulky.
Emerald Photochromic Lens
The photochromic lens changes tint as UV exposure changes. This makes the Otaku 18 practical for rides that move between bright open sections, shaded trails and overcast conditions without needing to stop and change lenses.
ULAC’s Köri lens technology is designed to improve contrast, minimise colour distortion and reduce eye fatigue. The 1.37mm cylindrical polycarbonate lens provides high impact resistance and UV400 protection from UVA and UVB rays.
Photochromic performance varies with temperature and UV exposure. The lens may not darken fully behind some vehicle windscreens because the glass blocks much of the UV light required to activate it.
Lightweight Vented Design
Removing the lower frame keeps the weight down and opens the view around the bottom of the lens. Integrated vents help air move through the glasses and reduce heat build-up while riding.
No cycling glasses are completely fog-proof, but the additional airflow is useful when climbing at lower speeds or riding in warmer conditions.
Neo Porter and RX Insert Included
The included RX insert can be fitted with prescription lenses by a suitable optometrist or optical provider.
The Neo Porter protects the glasses and can also be mounted as a compact 0.8L handlebar bag. Check the available space on your handlebar before fitting it and make sure the bag cannot interfere with cables, brake hoses, lights or steering.

The Otaku 18 is a good option for riders who want plenty of lens coverage without a heavy or enclosed frame. The photochromic lens is useful for changing New Zealand conditions, while the rimless construction keeps the glasses light and provides an open view.
They have a distinctly sporty shape, so riders wanting more casual-looking sunglasses may prefer the original full-frame Otaku. For riding performance and low weight, however, the Otaku 18 makes plenty of sense.
