Specialized Turbo Vado 3 5.0 IGH 2027
Description

Full-Power Touring with Simple, Low-Maintenance Gearing

The Specialized Turbo Vado 3 5.0 IGH is a full-power touring e-bike built for fast commuting, longer recreational rides and everyday transport. It combines Specialized’s smooth 3.1 motor with an Enviolo internal gear hub and Gates Carbon Drive belt, creating a quiet and straightforward bike that is easy to live with.

The motor delivers up to 810 W and 100 Nm, while the removable 840 Wh battery provides up to 150 km of claimed range. A 90 mm suspension fork, suspension dropper seatpost and wide 2.3-inch touring tyres help keep the bike comfortable on rough roads, cycleways and maintained gravel.

An integrated 2.2-inch touchscreen, powerful lights, MIK HD-compatible rear rack, full-length mudguards, kickstand and built-in security features make the Vado 3 5.0 IGH properly equipped for everyday use.

Specialized 3.1 Full-Power Motor

The Specialized 3.1 motor provides up to 810 W of peak power and 100 Nm of torque. It delivers strong support for hills, headwinds and loaded riding while responding naturally to the pressure you apply through the pedals.

The standard derailleur-equipped Vado 3 models produce up to 105 Nm. On the IGH version, torque is limited to 100 Nm to remain within the operating requirements of the Enviolo hub. It still provides plenty of support for commuting, touring and carrying additional gear.

Assistance levels and motor behaviour can be adjusted through the Specialized app, allowing you to prioritise stronger support or conserve battery power for a longer ride.

The motor system carries an IP67 rating, providing protection for regular use in wet conditions.

Removable 840 Wh Battery

The Specialized Turbo X2 840 Wh battery provides enough capacity for longer commutes, weekend rides and routes with plenty of climbing. Specialized claims a range of up to 150 km under suitable conditions.

Actual range depends on assistance mode, terrain, wind, temperature, rider and cargo weight, tyre pressure and riding style. Regular use of the highest assistance setting will reduce the available distance.

The battery can be removed through the side of the frame. This allows it to be charged indoors, secured separately or removed to reduce the bike’s weight when loading it onto a suitable e-bike carrier.

A removable battery is particularly useful while touring, as some accommodation providers may not allow the complete bike indoors or have a convenient power point near the secure bike-storage area.

For longer trips, the Vado 3 is compatible with the optional Specialized 280 Wh Full Power Range Extender. When combined with the main battery, this provides up to 1,120 Wh of total capacity.

Enviolo Internal Gearing

Instead of using a conventional derailleur and cassette, the Vado 3 5.0 IGH has an Enviolo internal gear hub with a 380% gearing range. The twist controller lets you move smoothly between easier and harder ratios without stepping through fixed gears.

The gearing can also be adjusted while stationary. If you stop unexpectedly at an intersection or partway up a hill, you can select an easier ratio before moving off again.

This 5.0 model uses manually controlled Enviolo gearing. It does not have the automatic shifting system fitted to the Vado 3 6.0 IGH, so the rider remains in direct control of the gearing.

Clean and Quiet Gates Carbon Drive

A Gates CDX belt replaces the conventional bicycle chain. It runs quietly, does not require regular chain lubrication and helps keep clothing cleaner during the daily commute.

The belt and enclosed hub gearing also leave fewer exposed drivetrain components to collect road grit or get knocked while the bike is parked.

No drivetrain is completely maintenance-free, but this setup requires considerably less routine cleaning and adjustment than a traditional chain, cassette and derailleur.

Comfort for Longer Rides

The SR Suntour fork provides 90 mm of suspension travel, helping the bike deal with broken seal, kerbs, gravel paths and rough sections of cycle trail.

At the rear, the dropper seatpost provides 100–125 mm of height adjustment and 40 mm of suspension movement. The dropper function makes it easier to lower the saddle when stopping, mounting or dismounting, while the suspension helps reduce impacts through the saddle.

The Body Geometry Rivo 2 Gel saddle, ergonomic grips and upright cockpit complete a comfortable setup for longer days on the bike.

Stable Touring Wheels and Tyres

Specialized Infinity 2.3-inch tyres provide a stable contact patch and useful cushioning across sealed roads, cycleways and maintained gravel. Flat-resistant construction helps reduce puncture risk, while reflective sidewalls improve visibility in low light.

The 30 mm internal-width alloy rims provide good support for the wide tyres, helping the bike feel predictable when the road surface changes.

This is a touring and all-road transport bike rather than a technical mountain bike. It is well suited to commuting, rail trails and maintained gravel routes, but its weight and equipment package are not intended for demanding mountain-bike trails.

Four-Piston Hydraulic Brakes

Tektro HD-T5040 four-piston hydraulic disc brakes provide the stopping power needed for a full-power e-bike carrying a rider, luggage and everyday equipment.

Extra-thick 2.3 mm rotors and substantial 5 mm brake pads help manage heat and wear. This provides controlled braking on longer descents and when riding in wet conditions.

Integrated 2.2-Inch Touchscreen

The integrated 2.2-inch colour touchscreen displays speed, battery level, assistance mode and ride information directly in front of the rider. A Turbo Ergonomic Remote lets you adjust motor support without taking your hand away from the grip.

An optional Quad Lock phone mount with wireless charging can be fitted separately. A compatible Quad Lock MAG phone case or adaptor may also be required, depending on the phone being used.

Specialized App and Rider Technology

The Specialized app can be used to customise motor assistance, manage display settings and record ride information. Compatible Apple Watch integration can also add heart-rate and activity data.

This allows the bike to be tuned around how you ride, whether you want stronger assistance for a hilly commute or more restrained support for a longer trip.

Practical Security

The removable battery is secured with a mechanical ABUS key lock, while built-in Apple Find My compatibility can help locate the bike through Apple’s Find My network.

Turbo System Lock can also disable motor assistance when activated. These systems provide useful additional security but do not replace a strong external lock.

We recommend securing the frame and a wheel to a fixed object whenever the bike is left unattended.

Equipped for Commuting and Touring

The MIK HD-compatible rear rack carries up to 27 kg and includes integrated elastics. It accepts compatible panniers, baskets and selected child-seat systems, making the bike useful for work, shopping or family transport.

A compatible MIK front rack can also be fitted and carries up to 10 kg. The front rack is sold separately.

The integrated Supernova headlight provides high and low-beam settings with up to 800 lumens. A rack-mounted rear light includes automatic braking detection, while the extra-long metal mudguards provide useful wet-weather coverage.

Who Is It For?

  • Regular commuting and everyday transport
  • Longer recreational and fitness rides
  • Rail trails and multi-day touring
  • Sealed roads, cycleways and maintained gravel
  • Riders carrying panniers, work gear or groceries
  • Anyone wanting clean and quiet belt-drive operation
  • Riders who prefer smooth manual gearing rather than automatic shifting
  • Riders wanting to reduce routine drivetrain maintenance

At 31.0 kg in size M, the Vado 3 5.0 IGH is a substantial full-power e-bike. It is best stored at ground level or somewhere with easy access and requires an e-bike-rated carrier if transported by vehicle.

It is comfortable on gravel roads and maintained trails, but it is not intended for technical mountain biking. Riders wanting a much lighter and more conventional bicycle feel may be better suited to a Vado SL.

Our Thoughts

The Vado 3 5.0 IGH makes a lot of sense for riders who use their bike regularly and want to minimise day-to-day drivetrain maintenance. The Gates belt stays clean and quiet, while the Enviolo hub lets you adjust the gearing smoothly and select an easier ratio while stopped.

We also like that the 5.0 remains manually shifted. You get the practical benefits of an internal hub while retaining direct control over the gearing. Riders wanting automatic cadence-based shifting can step up to the Vado 3 6.0 IGH.

The 840 Wh battery, strong motor and fully equipped touring build make this a capable car replacement. Its weight is the main consideration, but once moving it feels stable, composed and properly comfortable over longer distances.
