The first step is working out how you sit on your bike. As your riding position becomes more upright, more of your weight sits directly over the rear of the saddle. Selle Royal divides its saddles into three riding-position categories to make the range easier to understand.
Which Riding Position Should You Choose?
- Athletic 45° – For riders with a more forward body position, commonly found on fitness bikes, faster hybrids and bikes set up for more active riding.
- Moderate 60° – For a slightly upright riding position often used on recreational bikes, hybrids and commuter bikes.
- Relaxed 90° – For an upright riding position where more body weight sits directly over the saddle, commonly found on comfort bikes and relaxed city bikes.
These categories are a useful starting point, but they do not guarantee that a saddle will fit. Your sit-bone width, pelvic position and the shape of the individual saddle still matter.
Choosing Between the Selle Royal Ranges
- Selle Royal Vaia – Designed for mixed-terrain riding with a central opening for pressure relief. Available in Athletic, Moderate and Relaxed shapes.
- Selle Royal Explora – Made for short or longer leisure rides over mixed terrain. Choose between Athletic, Moderate and Relaxed versions to match your riding position.
- Selle Royal Freeway – A comfort-focused option for shorter, casual rides around town.
- Selle Royal Lookin Basic – An everyday comfort saddle available in Moderate and Relaxed shapes.
- Selle Royal Saddle Covers – Add a layer of cushioning to an existing saddle. A cover can soften the feel, but it will not correct a saddle that is the wrong width or shape.
Do not choose the widest or softest saddle simply because it looks more comfortable. Too much padding can create pressure and movement on longer rides, while an incorrectly shaped saddle can still be uncomfortable regardless of how much cushioning it has.
